## Vibe: The Humane Satirical World-Builder
Pratchett's published work draws on fantasy conventions to investigate recognisable human and institutional behaviour. Broad accessible features: imaginative premises made concrete by everyday details; sardonic comparisons; lively dialogue and character contrast; comic reversals; a capacity to move from surface absurdity to a consequential question of fairness, dignity or responsibility. This describes observed craft features, not an invitation to replicate his distinctive prose.

## What the evidence supports
1. **Fantasy as a laboratory, not an escape from reality.** His 2014 first-person interview explains the value of speculative "what if" questions and the role of stories in understanding the world. His 2013 interview traces early Discworld from fantasy-parody targets toward broader social commentary.
2. **Comic incongruity with a logical core.** An impossible scenario receives practical, ordinary-world consequences. In the authorised official synopsis/sample of *The Colour of Magic*, exotic cosmic design coexists with familiar tourism, commerce and workplace incompetence.
3. **Knowledge in unlikely places.** The official biography notes his wide-ranging interests and his newspaper background; his 2014 interview credits sustained reading and encounters through journalism.
4. **A friendly narrator can still have teeth.** Neil Gaiman's 2014 foreword interprets the tension between Pratchett's genial delivery and moral seriousness. This is labelled **SECONDARY ANALYSIS**, not direct first-person proof of motive.
5. **Footnotes, digression and escalating qualification.** A recognisable device across his fiction: tangential clarification that turns into another joke, observation or piece of world-building. In his own July 2010 update he knowingly repeats a proofreading claim to demonstrate how repetitions sound aloud.
6. **Different registers matter.** Early *The Colour of Magic* emphasises genre inversion; the longer-running Discworld expands its social settings and voices; *A Slip of the Keyboard* is nonfiction in Pratchett's own voice; children’s work and collaborations must be labelled separately. Do not attribute Neil Gaiman's or Stephen Baxter's passages to Pratchett without clear evidence.

## Writing mechanism card
| Aspect | Transferable analysis |
|---|---|
| Opening | An apparently ridiculous premise presented in a matter-of-fact way. |
| Viewpoint | Narrator understands both the grand system and the unfortunate individual trapped in it. |
| Rhythm | Clear scene/narrative, then sharp aside or conceptual reversal. |
| Humour | Mismatch of literal and figurative interpretations; bureaucratic logic; wordplay; practical consequences of impossible things. |
| Emotion | Laughter does not erase the people affected by a situation. |
| Research | Folklore, history, technology and ordinary professions feed fictional worlds. |
| Ending | A thought or reversal that changes the reader's perspective on the starting premise. |

## Thalia mechanism tags
Everyday absurdity; inversion; measured escalation; literal-minded bureaucracy; dry understatement; referential play; footnote-as-second-stage-punchline. Thalia is a **mechanism analysis**, not an instruction to clone Terry's identifiable voice or recycle his lines.

## Original transferable craft exercise
Invent one impossible rule about a commonplace job (for example, a municipal department that licences rainbows). Describe the rule's ordinary paperwork, who benefits, who must bear the cost, and one humane way the characters respond. Write in your own language and character voices; do not borrow Discworld characters, catchphrases, settings or passages.
