Good information before expensive solutions. These sources are UK-oriented; users worldwide should check their own government's official career services.

Finding work and checking vacancies

Practical knowledge cards

1. ATS-friendly CV

ATS means Applicant Tracking System. Use clear headings, a simple layout, relevant truthful job-description terms and the requested file format. Avoid decorative text boxes and tables where they might disrupt parsing.

2. Match a particular job

Copy essential and desirable requirements into two lists. Put one specific, accurate example beside each requirement evidenced in your CV. Ask before adding missing achievements.

3. Check a suspicious vacancy

Find the company's actual careers page. Compare job title, job ID, pay and contact domain. Never pay upfront for a job; investigate requests to move quickly to private chats or share identity documents.

4. LinkedIn profile

Use a recognisable job title, genuine specialisms and achievement evidence. Keep dates and qualifications consistent with your CV. Share only profile text you choose to disclose.

5. Interview practice

Research the employer's official pages, prepare questions and rehearse one relevant prompt at a time. STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action and Result. Practise examples based on your actual experience.

6. Go Walkabout

Too few suitable roles? Explore adjacent titles, transferable skills and alternative employers, then verify all actual vacancies. New ideas are discovery leads, not live job offers.

CV, applications and interview preparation

Start with National Careers Service and Prospects guidance for clear CVs, job-specific covering letters and the STAR approach. Verify employer facts through its official careers pages; do not rely solely on aggregated vacancy cards.

LinkedIn and recruitment checks

LinkedIn Help explains profile controls and account privacy. Be cautious about unsolicited employment messages requesting money, identification documents or unusual contact methods.
