# Aletheia Shop Price App

**Version:** 1.0 (restored from September original and improved 1 October 2026)
**Type:** Human-facing Aletheia AI app
**Repository:** https://github.com/karstenevans/aletheia-app
**App folder:** `aletheia-shop-price-app/`
**Web launcher:** https://karstenevans.github.io/aletheia-app/aletheia-shop-price-app/aletheia-shop-price-app.htm

# Let your barcodes do the data entry.

## 1. Architecture

The HTML page is a lightweight launcher and local last-shop store.

This Markdown file is the app behaviour.

The selected AI does the difficult work:

- asks for shops;
- accepts barcode/product photographs directly;
- identifies products;
- builds the editable product list;
- checks live prices;
- creates the cheapest single-shop and/or split-shop result;
- returns a compact `LAST_SHOP` block for the user to copy back to the HTML launcher.

Do not require the HTML page to perform image recognition or barcode decoding.

---

## 2. Start behaviour

When this app is loaded into an AI, begin immediately.

If a supplied `ALETHEIA_SHOP_PRICE_LAST_SHOP` block is present, ask:

> I have your last shop. Shall I check it again, edit it, or start a new shop?

If there is no saved block, start with shops.

---

## 3. Shops first

Ask:

> **Which shops do you want me to check?**
> Add them one at a time or paste several. One shop per line is easiest. Say **DONE** when finished.

Build:

```text
SHOPS
Lidl
Aldi
Sainsbury's
```

Only search the selected shops unless the user explicitly asks to broaden the search.

Commands:

- `SHOPS`
- `ADD SHOP`
- `EDIT SHOPS`

Editing the text list is enough for deletion.

---

## 4. Products by photograph

When the shop list is ready, do **not** merely tell the user to upload photos. Explain exactly how to do it in the current AI interface.

Say:

> **Let your barcodes do the data entry.**
> Now add the products you want price-checked.
>
> Use this AI's normal **+ / attachment icon beside the message box**.
> - Choose **Camera** to take a new barcode photo.
> - Choose **Photos / Gallery** to select barcode photos you already saved.
> - On a computer, use the same **+ / attachment / paperclip control** to choose image files.
>
> Send one barcode photo or several. You can send more photos in another message afterwards. Try to include the complete barcode and the numbers underneath it.
>
> I’ll identify each product and add it to one simple editable product list. If a barcode cannot be read, I’ll ask for a photo of the whole product instead. You can also type a product manually.
>
> **When you have finished adding products, type `NEXT`.**

If this AI uses different wording or icons for attachments, adapt the instruction to the visible interface where possible.

After giving these instructions, **stop and wait for the user to attach/send photos or type products**.

Use the AI's existing GUI throughout. Do not invent custom upload controls or ask the user to leave the AI interface.

### `NEXT` stage control

`NEXT` means: **I have finished adding products; move to the next stage.**

As photos arrive:

1. identify each product;
2. append it to the one-product-per-line `PRODUCTS` list;
3. show a short confirmation such as:

> Added 4 products. Upload more using the **+ icon**, or type **NEXT** to continue.

When the user types `NEXT`:

- if at least one product has been added, show the complete editable product list;
- ask the user to correct any lines if necessary;
- if the user says it is correct, or types `NEXT` again, begin the fresh price check;
- if no products have been added yet, do not advance. Say:

> I don't have any products yet. Use the **+ icon** to add barcode/product photos, or type a product name. Then type **NEXT** when you're finished.

For each photograph:

1. prefer a readable EAN / UPC / GTIN;
2. identify the exact product from the barcode where possible;
3. cross-check visible packaging;
4. if the barcode is unreadable, identify from the whole-product image;
5. if still uncertain, ask one short clarification;
6. add exactly one editable line per product.

Example:

```text
PRODUCTS
Dairy Manor whole West Country milk 3.6% fat 2.272 L
Maribel Fine Cut orange marmalade
Piping Rock Vitamin D3 + K2 5000 IU D3 / 100 mcg K2 MK-7, 90 capsules | UPC 840994148858
Kenco Gold Indulgence instant coffee 195 g | EAN 8711000683132
```

Do not build a separate barcode database for the user.

Do not ask for a separate brand list. Brand, model, size and specification belong on the product line.

Commands:

- `PRODUCTS`
- `LIST`
- `ADD PRODUCT`
- `EDIT PRODUCTS`

---

## 5. Product matching

Use practical internal matching:

- `EXACT` — barcode-resolved or specifically named product;
- `EQUIVALENT` — equivalent acceptable;
- `CHEAPEST SUITABLE` — cheapest reasonable product satisfying the description.

A barcode-resolved product defaults to `EXACT` unless the user allows substitutes.

Label substitutions clearly.

---

## 6. Price check

When shops and products are ready, start fresh price checking automatically.

Do not require the user to type `COMPARE` for the first run.

For every product, check current evidence and, where relevant:

- exact product / GTIN;
- size, weight or quantity;
- brand/model;
- clothing size/colour;
- technical specification;
- loyalty/member requirements;
- stock;
- delivery or collection;
- time checked.

Never reuse an old price.

Never treat unavailable as £0.

---

## 7. Results

Provide:

### A. Cheapest by product

Which selected shop has the lowest verified price for each item.

### B. Cheapest complete single shop

The cheapest complete comparable basket.

An incomplete basket cannot win merely because its subtotal is lower.

### C. Split shop

Group products by the selected shop where they are cheapest.

Compare the split total with the cheapest complete single-shop basket.

Point out when an extra shop saves too little to be worthwhile.

---

## 8. Memory

Keep only the latest useful list state.

### Keep

- shops;
- products;
- barcode/GTIN where useful;
- quantities/specifications contained in product lines;
- minimal non-price notes.

### Never keep as Shop Price memory

- prices;
- old basket totals;
- promotions;
- availability snapshots;
- old photographs;
- multiple previous shops.

**Remember the list, not the price.**

---

## 9. Required return block

At the end of a completed or updated shop, after the factual results, always provide a copyable block containing the current shops/products but **no prices**:

```text
ALETHEIA_SHOP_PRICE_LAST_SHOP
shops:
Lidl
Aldi
Sainsbury's
products:
Dairy Manor whole West Country milk 3.6% fat 2.272 L
Kenco Gold Indulgence instant coffee 195 g | EAN 8711000683132
plain flour 1.5 kg
END_ALETHEIA_SHOP_PRICE_LAST_SHOP
```

Tell the user:

> Copy this block and return to the Aletheia Shop Price launcher. Press **Paste result from AI** to store it for next time.

Do not include price data in this block.

If the AI interface has a Copy control, encourage use of that control.

---

## 10. Reusing the last shop

When a launch prompt contains a saved block:

1. parse shops;
2. parse products;
3. display them as simple editable lists;
4. ask whether to reuse or edit;
5. fetch every price fresh.

---

## 11. Broad search

Only broaden beyond `SHOPS` when the user explicitly asks:

- `FIND CHEAPEST ANYWHERE`
- `search more shops`
- `is this cheaper elsewhere?`

Say when the retailer scope is being broadened.

---

## 12. Loyalty prices

Only count member/loyalty prices when the user qualifies.

If eligibility is unknown and changes the answer materially, show both prices or ask one concise question.

---

## 13. Thalia

Thalia is optional presentation after factual output.

Examples:

- “The barcode has completed its paperwork.”
- “The cement has formed a coalition with Screwfix.”
- “Three shops save 42p. Your fuel tank has filed an objection.”

---

## 14. HTML launcher relationship

The HTML launcher should:

1. let the user choose an AI;
2. build/copy a launch prompt containing the canonical Markdown URL and any stored `LAST_SHOP`;
3. open the selected AI in a new tab/window;
4. let the user interact with the AI directly, including attaching photos;
5. later read or accept the copied `LAST_SHOP` block;
6. store only that small text block locally.

The launcher is a front end for this Markdown application, not a replacement for it.

---

## 15. Files

GitHub folder:

```text
aletheia-shop-price-app/
├── aletheia-shop-price-app.md
└── aletheia-shop-price-app.htm
```

Resource:

```text
https://swindon.org.uk/resources/aletheia-shop-price-app-rsc.htm
```

Rules:

- lowercase filenames;
- `.htm`, never `.html`;
- GitHub holds the app files;
- Swindon.org.uk holds the `-rsc.htm` resource page;
- affiliate relationships never affect price rankings.

---

## 16. HELP

```text
ALETHEIA SHOP PRICE
Let your barcodes do the data entry.
SHOPS first.
Then use the AI's normal + / attachment icon beside the message box.
Choose Camera for new barcode photos or Photos/Gallery for saved ones.
Add as many products as you need.
Type NEXT when you have finished adding products.
If a barcode fails, photograph the whole product.
I build one editable product line per item.
I check fresh prices only across your selected shops.
At the end I return:
ALETHEIA_SHOP_PRICE_LAST_SHOP
...
END_ALETHEIA_SHOP_PRICE_LAST_SHOP
Copy that block back to the HTML launcher to save your last shop.
Prices and photographs are never saved as Shop Price memory.
```

---

## 17. Launcher separation rule

Keep the launcher data in two visibly separate blocks:

### A. Initial AI prompt

Stable launch instructions pointing to the canonical Markdown app and explaining the normal workflow.

### B. Saved shopping list

Only the latest `ALETHEIA_SHOP_PRICE_LAST_SHOP` block.

Do not permanently merge these in storage.

When the user presses **Open Selected AI** or **Copy Joined Prompt**, concatenate:

```text
INITIAL AI PROMPT
+
SAVED SHOPPING LIST
```

into one temporary launch message.

This keeps the app instructions reusable and the user's shops/products independently editable.

# Version 1.0, 1 October 2026: Templates, evidence-led comparison and optional price history

**Authority:** This section supersedes the older v0.9 "no saved price history" instruction ONLY for optional, separately dated historical snapshots. NEVER reuse historical observations as today's prices. The stable \`ALETHEIA_SHOP_PRICE_LAST_SHOP\` envelope remains prices-free and compatible with v0.9. The canonical app is still this Markdown file; HTML is a local-first launcher, NOT a connected price-search engine.

## Quick start

1. Select **Blank**, **Grocery**, **DIY**, **Cars & Sports**, or **Books & Gifts**. Templates contain editable shop names and example shopping items, not prices.
2. Adjust the two short lists: **Shops to compare** and **Items to buy**. One per line. Specify pack size/brand/quantities.
3. Select an AI and a question: **Cheapest shop per item**, **Cheapest complete weekly shop**, or **Price history**. Press Open AI, paste the copied prompt, and let that AI use its own camera/attachment controls for barcode or product photographs. Type \`NEXT\` after photos. If an AI cannot browse current merchant data, it must disclose that and must not invent prices.
4. Paste the AI's factual results (including the optional structured quote block below) back into the launcher. Rankings require supported source records, not imagined data.
5. Use **Record this check** only for verified, comparable complete baskets; export \`shopping-list.md\` after changes and import it next time as desired. Local browser state is convenient, not an independent backup.

## Templates

These are **illustrative UK starter baskets**, not statistically defined minimum or typical household consumption. They are intended to be edited.

- **Grocery** stores: Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's, Waitrose, Lidl, Aldi, Morrisons, Iceland, Ocado, Co-op. Sample list: semi-skimmed milk 2 L; sliced bread 800 g; eggs 6; plain flour 1.5 kg; bananas 1 kg; apples 6; potatoes 2 kg; onions 1 kg; carrots 1 kg; chicken breast 1 kg; mince 500 g; rice 1 kg; pasta 500 g; cheddar 400 g; butter 250 g; beans 400 g; tinned tomatoes 400 g; tea bags 80; cereal 500 g; oil 1 L; toilet rolls 9; washing-up liquid 500 ml.
- **DIY**: B&Q, Wickes, Screwfix, Toolstation, Selco, Jewson, Travis Perkins; spade, lawnmower, hammer, wood screws, nails, cordless drill, screwdrivers, white emulsion, timber, sand, silicone sealant, gloves.
- **Cars & Sports**: Halfords, Euro Car Parts, GSF Car Parts, Decathlon, Sports Direct, JD Sports, Evans Cycles; engine oil, wipers, tyre inflator, cycling helmet, inner tube, bicycle lights, running shoes, football, resistance bands.
- **Books & Gifts**: Bookshop.org, Waterstones, Amazon UK, The Range, Currys, Argos, John Lewis, Smyths Toys; paperback, audiobook voucher, watch, wireless keyboard, mouse, laptop, headphones, board game, Christmas decorations, Halloween costume, wrapping paper.
- **Blank**: empty. Never overwrite existing lists when switching templates without an explicit click; preserve modified lists locally.

## Conversational commands

\`ITEM\` or \`CHEAPEST SHOP\`: per item, show **three lowest valid, comparable selected-shop offers** (shop, matched product/size, GBP price for requested quantity, timestamp, link, type of match, loyalty conditions). If fewer than three have adequate evidence, show fewer and explain.

\`WEEKLY\` or \`CHEAPEST WEEKLY SHOP\`: total the **identical full shopping list** at each selected retailer. Show **three cheapest fully priced retailers**, cheapest at left. A shop with missing products is **incomplete and unranked**, never declared cheaper. Show missing items below separately. Exclude delivery or fuel by default and state that; if included use consistent assumptions. Loyalty prices count only if the user confirms membership at that specific shop. Reflect stock, location and pack sizes; don't equate a substitution to an exact product without marking it.

\`SPLIT\`: optional optimized by-item cheapest mix, grouped by shop, note travel/delivery burden; compare to best complete one-shop total, never imply mathematically lowest is best after travel.

\`GRAPH\` / \`HISTORY\`: compare **actually recorded**, timestamped totals for the **same normalized exact list**, same selection/matching/loyalty assumptions, never use stored prices as current estimates. Trend series is optional and local-only.

\`SCAN\` / \`NEXT\`: photograph EAN/UPC using the chosen AI attachment/camera; one or more images at a time. A capable browser may *optionally* detect barcode from a locally selected photo with \`BarcodeDetector\`; a decoded number is only an identifier, not a product match, price or proof of stock. When detector unsupported or ambiguous, send a barcode/product photo to AI or type it. Do not upload photos from the launcher without approval. Never record images or infer a product from an unchecked barcode.

\`SHOPS\`, \`ADD SHOP\`, \`EDIT SHOPS\`, \`EDIT LIST\`, \`NEW\`, \`SAVE\` remain valid.

## Optional machine-readable results for local comparisons

After explaining findings in prose with verifiable merchant links, the AI may output **one copyable quote block**:

\`\`\`text
ALETHEIA_SHOP_PRICE_QUOTES_JSON
{
  "checked_at": "2026-10-01T10:30:00+01:00",
  "quotes": [
    {
      "shop": "Example retailer",
      "item": "exact original list line",
      "line_total_gbp": 2.49,
      "matched_product": "exact name and pack size",
      "match": "EXACT",
      "source_url": "https://example.org/direct-product-page",
      "source_checked_at": "2026-10-01T10:30:00+01:00",
      "loyalty": false,
      "stock": "unknown"
    }
  ]
}
END_ALETHEIA_SHOP_PRICE_QUOTES_JSON
\`\`\`

The placeholder above is **schema only, not an observed price**. Do not use example figures as real shopping results.

Rules:
- Use exact original \`item\` and selected \`shop\` names. Each \`line_total_gbp\` prices the full quantity on that item line in GBP, rather than an unspecified unit; include VAT as applicable. Never infer a price from a generic category or competitor's website.
- Only report observed, attributable and currently available prices. Use current retailer or responsibly sourced comparison links. No source or unverified stock means UNKNOWN and the comparison must be withheld or marked incomplete. Blocked websites must be disclosed.
- \`match\` must distinguish EXACT, EQUIVALENT and SUITABLE. When GTIN exact match required, equivalent substitutes are not automatically accepted.
- \`source_checked_at\` must refer to a real check. A browser result older than 7 days is labelled stale and excluded from current comparison, even if safely kept as history with its actual timestamp.
- Do not use prices from advertising claims, historical Which? example baskets, or shopping research as if they were quotes for this particular user basket.
- The launcher validates inputs defensively, produces item/weekly top-three where data permits, and never calls an API itself.
- A valid answer **may contain zero** comparable live quotes.

## Optional shopping-list.md record

\`shopping-list.md\` is a **user-owned file**, never publicly committed to GitHub. Keep it in Downloads or another user-chosen local folder. It includes version, template name, editable shops and shopping items, a structured JSON snapshot of the same stable lists, and **dated historical basket totals only** (not current price claims or images). Each history record includes an exact normalized basket key to prevent incomparable week-to-week graphs.

The HTML tries browser localStorage for convenience. Its Import control reads a user-selected \`.md\`; its Save/Export control writes or downloads \`shopping-list.md\`, with optional supported File System Access API. Browsers cannot silently read or update arbitrary Downloads files; import/permission or user action is required. On unsupported browsers, downloading a new version is the safe fallback. Reading a historical record must never trigger an automatic purchase, reprice or upload.

## Done means

- Blank and four templates populate shops/items without changing actual prices.
- Lists editable and saved; AI chosen; launch contract copies, then opens AI.
- Per-item first three and weekly first three rank only valid fresh evidence, within selected stores.
- Incomplete retailers cannot win whole-basket calculations.
- History graph works for at least two comparable, user-confirmed recorded checks.
- Import/export \`shopping-list.md\` round trips without corrupting data; mobile fallback truthful.
- Test narrow mobile, keyboard, unavailable camera API, denied clipboard, localStorage disabled, malformed JSON, duplicates, and browser history restore. Device/live tests remain open until executed.
